At National Terrier CH Show yesterday Lionel’s daughter Delia - Brumberhill Brie at Risdene - made her curtsey to the world and took the Minor Puppy Bitch class under Mrs Val Furness. It was a good day as her mother CH Brumberhill Belle de Jour took BOB. (I gave this lovely girl a first CC in 2008 and it is always pleasing to see good exhibits go on and fulfil their potential.)

Why not register and as well as this year’s event you can look through the archives to see John and CH Ragsdale Blueberry in the Terrier Group 2004 under Owen Grindey. What a beard!!!!!!

2009 REVIEW

2009 was a curate’s egg of a year to say the least. Good in parts -rather horrible in others!

March: we enjoyed our usual festival of delights with Crufts, surely the pinnacle of showcases for canine endeavours and an honourable 3rd place for Llewellyn followed by Cheltenham the high spot of the National Hunt Calendar where the great Kauto Star thrilled one and all to take a second Gold Cup.

Note to self – if you’re happy when you’re judging…….smile!

May: we had the honour and pleasure of judging at the Årets Border Terrier Show in Sweden. We were extremely envious of the perfect surroundings which could not be bettered especially as the weather was nigh perfect. If only we had such a place in the UK. Not everyone wants to run a caravan or full blown motor home but here there were lovely cabins in the woods that allowed dogs so all could share the fun in by the lake. Our report can be found here: What was particularly nice when we got the catalogue afterwards was finding the offspring of dogs we have liked in the past like Brumberhill Basil who has clearly been making his mark in Scandinavia.

June: we were quite sad to set off for the SBTC CH Show at Cheltenham with John wearing the Show Manager’s hat for the last time. Pam Creed had set a high standard when we took on responsibility for this premier event in the BT calendar in 1991. Since then we have enjoyed some priceless and very special days but we decided it was time for some new blood (in fact we did try to retire before) and the lovely and very able David Hunt now takes the baton. It will be rather nice in future to be able to relax in the shadow of Cleeve hill and watch the judging and even enjoy the special atmosphere inside the ring for a change!

During the month we were delighted that our lovely lads sired two new champions bred by two formidable Border kennels – both made up within a matter of days of each other.

At Cheltenham Anne Roslin-Williams gained the crowning 3rd CC for her CH Mansergh Miss Otis (a full litter sister to Lionel) by Leo out of the gorgeous CH Hampos Flaked Oats at Mansergh to whom as a Junior I awarded a 1st ticket of 20!). Just 3 days later at the Three Counties Championship Show Don Bean made up CH Brumberhill Battlecry by Lionel out of CH Brumberhill Belle de Jour to whom I also awarded a 1st ticket strangely and bred by Stuart McPherson. A lovely few days for one and all!

Summer: After Cheltenham as well as tidying up the paper work in the usual way for the show we were also heavily involved in another BT project which while time consuming was a real pleasure. Pondering over old pedigrees and pictures is always a delight and isn't it fascinating to see characteristics re-appearing time after time especially when they are highly desirable ones?!

We continued to enjoy a rather lovely summer. Not perhaps the Barbeque summer promised by the meteorologists but nevertheless warm and bright most of the time – show dates excepted of course! Although we didn’t get to many shows we made special visits to close friends and the dogs continued to thrive.

September: At the SBTC Open show Elly Weijenborg-Weggemans (of the Netherlands Van de Ossekoele Kennel) judged. As a friend we elected not to exhibit but were very proud that Quink’s children from the Hawcoat kennel owned by Lizzie and Rebecca Larner and Carol Lumbard featured well.

Hawcoat Bertie won the Junior dog class and Hawcoat Starina owned by Mrs Lizzie and Rachel Larner & Carol Lumbard went Best Bitch. This pair along with a third sister Hawcoat Sweet Fairy have been really doing well this year - indeed at Richmond CH Show all three won their classes respectively.

October: Congratulations to our chum Tracy Ansell who won Groomer of the Year at the British Dog Grooming Championships hosted by the Pet Care Trust and the British Dog Groomers’ Association (BDGA), at the Kennel Club Building at Stoneleigh.

Karl went along to be her Gundog model. There aren’t many people we would allow any where near our dogs with a grooming kit but Tracy is a brilliant groomer who presents her own Chalkwell poodles in tip top order and between ourselves has trimmed for some very well known handlers over the years. Karl was apparently laid back throughout!

Autumn: sadly I lost my wonderful father and although many of our dog friends did not know him well he was always extremely proud of all the Risdenes and our success. He stoutly manned the teapot and told every dog that they were his favourite. With a secret, never-ending stash of ginger biscuits he was always theirs! My close knit family stood together as always and were with him all the way to the end as we promised.

Too soon thereafter we lost another close and very dear friend. We are reminded how short life is and none of us can be children forever. Thank goodness for our canine chums who enforce normality and remind us to breathe and go on.

Winter:

Good news at last as we welcomed delectable Delia to Risdene.

We wait with all digits crossed for her teeth and everything to go right but what a lovely thing she is!

Well I know I have forgotten more than I have remembered but the year ended quietly with a silent toast to absent friends and heartfelt good wishes to all those we know and care for.

Seasons Greetings & 2008 Round-up

2008 draws to an end and while we haven't been out too much this season it is great to see that stock by our lads has still scored well.

Anne Roslin-Williams Mansergh Miss Otis by Leo took another CC at LKA.
Brumberhill Battlecry owned by Don Bean and sired by Lionel added a second CC at SKC and
Janet Lee's CH Tythrop Tapas also by Leo took his tally to 12 CC's at the Midland Border Terrier Club Championship Show.

Congratulations to all dogs and their owners.

In the Summer I had a splendid time at the World Show held in Sweden where our venerable 11 years old gentleman Leo came out of retirement to gain an honourable 3rd with an excellent grading in the veteran class with the following report:

"Typical head and expression. Excellent neck, shoulder and upperarm. Straight front and very good feet. Excellent topline, tailset, super tail. Excellent hind quarters. Best coat and pelt of the day. Moving well behind, just a shade wide in front."

His tail didn't stop but he soon decided he was too venerable to join in much during the challenge! What a pleasure to show and we thank our wonderful friend Anne Buvik of the Stormbird Kennel for providing him with such a fun packed, natural life on the Norwegian coast with almost daily visits to the forest - Border Terrier heaven!!!

I was very pleased with my main winners and as always am very grateful to exhibitors who travel such distances and incur entry fees and other expenses in order to show. I am ever mindful that weekday events become more and more difficult to attend with travel problems and work commitments so it makes one even more appreciative of the opportunity to examine such lovely dogs.

There was good and bad news in April.

Pixie with Sally in the Pedigree 25th Anniversary Veteran Stakes Finals 2003

The latest blow to hit Risdene was the loss of our beloved Pixie - CH Syrosa Dizzy Damsel.

She made our hearts sing. The most jolly person, she adored life and we adored her and now she isn’t here to demand her dinner at the top of her voice or lead the others astray and then come and tell-tale what they are doing!

She always free showed and just loved it. When we put her away she was thoroughly miserable at being left at home but was overjoyed when we brought her back out as a veteran and campaigned her in stakes classes. She was usually in the cards and won lots of grub which she would have appreciated had she but known it. After a couple of near misses it was a real thrill to win over the three days at East of England CH Show and qualify for the annual Pedigree Finals. On the day Liz Cartlege also “borrowed” her for the Junior Handler Finals for the “handle a dog/breed you don’t know round.” She showed like a trooper for her juvenile handler and we were so happy when the young lady proceeded to win the title that year.

Ever helpful she would take the washing down immediately you pegged it to the line (but unfortunately never got the hang of the letting it dry and using the washing basket bit), she would give you the hose pipe in case you had forgotten you had put it down - soaking you in the process and I will never forget the chortles of a stall holder who was holding her for us while a colleague helped us choose a new show cage – she was killing all his lovely sheepskin toys and after dispatching them with a sharp shake was throwing them in the mud and leaping 3 feet high for the next one. He stopped laughing when we said we would buy only one!

Pixie never stopped laughing. She lit up our lives and we will miss her dreadfully – we know it was the right decision – but we will miss her so and it is too soon after Floyd.

On a happier note we were delighted to see Lionel's first CC winning son Brumberhill Battlecry take the ticket and BOB at National Terrier under Jayne Gillam for Mr Don Bean.

Later at our first show of the season Llewellyn won a good Limit class at the EABTC Ch show under Melanie Lewis.

CRUFTS 2008

It's all over for 2008 and this year John had the honour of judging the Border Terriers. He was thrilled with his entry of 256 dogs and thanks the many exhibitors for their support!

We were really happy to hear from Kristin of the Bordysk Kennel in Norway that her 12 month old Leo daughter Nemi took the RCC and BB2 at her first show. Congratulations!

In 2007 Jack - CH Mansergh Master Chef at Risdene sired a CC and RCC winner. Leo - CH Lyddington Last Supper at Risdene sired three CC winners following his brief return visit and Lionel - Mansergh Hoast a Roast at Risdene sired his first RCC winner. Once again our lovely boys have produced sound, honest Border Terriers who fit the standard - what more can we ask?

The end of the year is nigh and at Risdene we are glad! We have had the dubious pleasure of a horrible bug which left the humans hors de combat so we are looking forward to the festive break.

After losing Josh earlier this year, John and I were devastated to lose our wonderful and most perfect friend, the irrepressible Floyd – Nor CH Alhambra Kenneth Branagh as well. It is hard to believe that he won’t ever again put his head into our hands and look at us with his beautiful eyes, or snuggle under the desk to keep us company while we work.

LEO - HALFWAY LEADER STUD DOG 2007

In Dog World today Leo - CH/Nor CH Lyddington Last Supper at Risdene - was listed as halfway Border Terrier leader of the Royal Canin Top Stud Dog 2007 up to and including Windsor weekend.

We haven't been out since SWKA and this was a nice surprise particularly as Leo only came back to the UK for a matter of months at the back end of 2004 for his "jolly holiday" - funnily enough he returned to Norway on Valentine's Day 2005!

Michelle had to step in at short notice due to the ill health of scheduled judge Gordon Knight and we send best wishes for a speedy recovery to Gordon.
